We All LEAD DEI by Sharing Our Stories

Diversity includes everyone at PJM. Sharing our own stories, as well as hearing and reading others’ stories, helps us tap into and experience empathy, a core element of our LEAD framework. Taking the time to listen and learn from one another is one of the most inclusive things we can do. Find a few Micro Stories from some of our employees who have shared their experience with DEI. Why is diversity, equity and inclusion important to you?

Francine Murphy, Analyst II – CCS Portfolio & Project Management, D&I Council Member

"The offering of the Flex First program for me created an opportunity to better manage my work/life balance through a very scary pandemic. It showed that PJM cared enough about all of the different circumstances that we may have within the PJM community of employees."

Yang Chen, Sr. Business Solution Engineer II – Applied Innovation

"When I was a kid, I used to go to work with my grandfathers, who were both civil engineers. I loved to watch them working on blueprints, building things up from what they learned. When I went to college, I wanted to choose a major where I could apply what I learned to help the world, like my grandfathers did. Although I realized there were not many women majoring in STEM back in China and in my continued studies here in the U.S., I’m so glad that I followed my role models and became an engineer so that I can apply what I’ve learned in my daily job. I feel so honored that I am one of the engineers who can keep the lights on in everyone’s home. Diversity includes everyone. What is your story?"
— Yang Chen, Sr. Business Solution Engineer II – Applied Innovation

Susan Buehler, Chief Communications Officer ─ Corporate Communications

"Breast cancer is a disability? Yes, but instead of thinking that way, I choose to think of it as an opportunity to educate. Prior to my role at PJM, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I didn’t want anyone to know, especially at work. I was afraid of being treated differently and not having opportunities to grow my career. I could not have been more wrong! People need a support system both at home and at work. Like me, everyone wants to be included. Sharing my story helps create awareness about early detection, saves lives and proves there are no limitations. I am fortunate to be in what I call the "survivors club." Who do you know with a disability?"
— Susan Buehler, Chief Communications Officer ─ Corporate Communications

Michael Coyle, Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer

"Growing up I remember my aunt not being able to bring her boyfriend to family events.David had a different skin color than we did. I also grew up in a place and time where I didn't feel comfortable coming out as gay until after college.

I have seen what racism and homophobia do to hurt and demoralize people. That led me to a career in DEI. I am here to help you to tell your story. Diversity includes everyone at PJM!"
— Michael Coyle, Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer

Flex First Work Arrangements

The pandemic changed the way companies work, and PJM has adopted a philosophy that focuses on two main elements: the security of the grid and the safety and well-being of employees.

PJM employees have shown they can adapt to new work environments, and as a result, PJM offers flexibility in remote, hybrid and on-site work called Flex First.

Our success in this Flex First work arrangement has been based on strong interpersonal communication, open-mindedness and reciprocity. Our arrangements are a partnership between employees and leaders; we all benefit from flexibility and must in turn demonstrate flexibility as we collaborate to fulfill PJM’s business needs.

Flexibility and the wellness of employees will remain at the forefront of our post-pandemic work life. We must be understanding and supportive, and treat each other with kindness and respect as we all balance work and home arrangements.

Flex First seeks to find the intersection of meeting PJM’s core mission and business needs and providing flexibility for employees. Flex First requires managers and employees to agree on flexible work arrangements since there is not a “one size fits all” approach. PJM is dedicated to ensuring the flexible work process is employee-centric, and it will be reviewed, discussed and evolved as employees become accustomed to new or changing working patterns.
