Plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) and
plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) (PDF) are charging up the power and automobile industries. These new era cars can plug into an electric source, charge up and drive for hours with little or no other fuel. They also can work with the grid to make electric power more efficient and even more reliable.

A few demonstration cars already have shown both performance on the road and the ability to store power and discharge it to the grid when needed. PJM Interconnection supports projects and partnerships with the automotive, electric and battery manufacturing industries as well as university researchers. PJM co-sponsored two summits in 2009, one with the
Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in January and one with
Ohio State University’s research in September, bringing together various partners and stakeholders in developing PHEVs. Among the stakeholders were representatives from federal and state regulatory commissions, electric and automotive industries and academia.
