PJM/EPRI 2010 Energy Storage Summit Presentations
Public policy and emerging technology were the two main themes of the 2010 Energy Storage Summit, sponsored by PJM Interconnection and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) on April 20, 2010. Energy experts from the United States and Italy discussed the future of energy storage technologies and its implications in supporting renewable energy and frequency regulation service.
Energy storage solutions enable electricity produced during times of low demand to be used during high-demand hours. It also enables the full potential of intermittent renewable resources such as wind and solar and can efficiently stabilize the transmission system through frequency regulation, according to several speakers at the summit.

Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Chairman Jon Wellinghoff and Department of Energy (DOE) Under Secretary Kristina Johnson opened the summit, outlining the current vision for renewable resources integration and energy storage while discussing existing and needed federal policy.
“If storage is to be both a transmission and generation asset, there’s a potential for a cross-subsidization of cost recovery through transmission rates,” Wellinghoff said, adding that determining how developers will recover their investment is a high priority.
Johnson stressed the importance of energy storage development in parallel with the growth of cleaner energy.
Three panels of speakers focused on the subjects of near- and long-term renewable projections, technical aspects of energy storage and the challenges of implementing new storage systems. The summit concluded with recommendations and next steps by Arshad Mansoor, vice president of the Power Delivery and Utilization Sector for EPRI.
Terry Boston, president and CEO of PJM, noted that energy storage’s ability to be available at times when wind and intermittent sources can’t, makes it a key partner in new developments on the grid.
