I loved to watch them working on blueprints, building things up from what they learned. When I went to college, I wanted to choose a major where I could apply what I learned to help the world, like my grandfathers did. Although I realized there were not many women majoring in STEM back in China and in my continued studies here in the U.S., I’m so glad that I followed my role models and became an engineer so that I can apply what I’ve learned in my daily job. Yes, but instead of thinking that way, I choose to think of it as an opportunity to educate. Prior to my role at PJM, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I didn’t want anyone to know, especially at work. I was afraid of being treated differently and not having opportunities to grow my career. I could not have been more wrong! People need a support system both at home and at work. Like me, everyone wants to be included. Sharing my story helps create awareness about early detection, saves lives and proves there are no limitations. I am fortunate to be in what I call the "survivors club." Diversity includes everyone at PJM!"— Michael Coyle, Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer Flex First Work Arrangements The pandemic changed the way companies work, and PJM has adopted a philosophy that focuses on two main elements: the security of the grid and the safety and well-being of employees. PJM employees have shown they can adapt to new work environments, and as a result, PJM offers flexibility in remote, hybrid and on-site work called Flex First. Our success in this Flex First work arrangement has been based on strong interpersonal communication, open-mindedness and reciprocity. Our arrangements are a partnership between employees and leaders; we all benefit from flexibility and must in turn demonstrate flexibility as we collaborate to fulfill PJM’s business needs. Flexibility and the wellness of employees will remain at the forefront of our post-pandemic work life. We must be understanding and supportive, and treat each other with kindness and respect as we all balance work and home arrangements. Flex First seeks to find the intersection of meeting PJM’s core mission and business needs and providing flexibility for employees. Flex First requires managers and employees to agree on flexible work arrangements since there is not a “one size fits all” approach. PJM is dedicated to ensuring the flexible work process is employee-centric, and it will be reviewed, discussed and evolved as employees become accustomed to new or changing working patterns. Location PJM Interconnection’s main campus in Valley Forge, Pa., occupies a prime location central to other metropolitan areas. The campus is located in a suburban office park less than 25 miles from Center City Philadelphia. The PJM headquarters also is within easy driving distance of cultural centers like New York City, Washington, D.C. and Baltimore.
