What We Do

Since 1927, PJM has been providing power reliably and cost-efficiently by sharing electricity across state lines. Working with local utilities, PJM supplies the grid with reliable power from New Jersey to North Carolina and west to Illinois, serving 13 states and D.C. PJM’s operations, markets and planning functions leverage scale, competition and market transparency to save customers about $5 billion annually.

Operations

PJM monitors the grid 24/7/365, directing the flow of electricity across 13 states and Washington, D.C. As an independent grid operator, PJM dispatches the lowest-cost power to where it’s needed most from among a diverse fleet of generation resources.

PJM balances supply and demand in real time to keep the grid stable.

Planning

PJM doesn’t just respond in the moment; it prepares for what’s coming next. PJM’s long-term regional transmission planning process provides a broad, interstate perspective that identifies the most effective and cost-efficient improvements to the grid to ensure reliability and economic benefits on a systemwide basis.

Markets

PJM operates several types of competitive wholesale markets through which large volumes of electricity are bought and sold. Some markets procure energy needed for today or tomorrow, while others ensure there will be enough resources in place to meet future demand.

Corporate Strategy & Value Proposition

PJM’s enterprise strategy sets the organization’s direction over the next five years, beginning in 2026. Reliability is our North Star. PJM provides value in core efficiencies, including generation investment, integration of more efficient resources and lower energy production costs.

Advanced Technologies & Innovation

PJM’s Advanced Technology Initiative provides opportunities for innovators – including PJM staff, member organizations, research and academic institutions, and industry experts – to advance power grid operations and wholesale electricity markets.
